THE PROMISE OF "UNITY"

Biden's inauguration day

The world watched closely to see how exactly Biden would lay out his vision for the nation as its new president.  He spoke about the greatness of democracy … that had just brought about his election.  But he proposed that he would be a president for all Americans, not just those who voted for him.  Indeed, the theme of his speech was the country's need for unity … and how he was going to address that need.

The new President now addresses the nation

He talks of the glory of democracy ... referring to how it proved itself in choosing him to be president!  ... in contrast to the violent mob that so recently raided the Capitol building.   He talked about the importance of reuniting America ... against extremism, violence, etc ... and lies.   He stressed the importance of tolerance ... and listening to each other.

He gave the idea that he would be one who would lead through consulting with others
... rather than just dictating policy.

Time would soon (very soon) reveal how well he would live up to that excellent political-moral ideal.

In any case, typical of such events, former presidents (Clinton, Bush Jr. and Obama)
and other key officials make their presence felt.
(where did all the masks disappear to?)

Tragically not-present is former President Trump

THE ACTUALITY OF "IDEOLOGY"

Then, amazingly enough, he soon enough made his way to his new office in the White House where, in front of photographers, he began to issue one Executive Order after another, 17 in total … all of them basically to undo the legacy of the previous four years under Trump.

More "Progressivism"

Indeed, in the first month of his new tenure as U.S. President, he issued some 40+ Executive Orders, a number exceeding even the number of such orders issued by many previous presidents over the span of an entire year.  In short, the political "unity" that Biden had emphasized in his inaugural address would come about only with Americans lining up behind this president with a very Progressive political agenda.  It was up to them, not him, to bring about the spirit of unity!

Thus he shut down further construction of the long-in-developing Keystone oil pipeline, a pipeline designed to bring a massive amount of Canadian oil to American refineries (creating even greater regional oil independence for America) … because he wanted America to take the lead in cutting back its dependence on fossil fuels – to help fight the problem of global warming (what then about India and China that depend on huge amounts of such fuel for their economies?).  Biden also ordered a halt to all further oil and gas exploration on federal lands … under the same logic.  And he reversed Trump's decision to boycott the Paris Climate Agreement.

Not surprisingly, Saudi Arabia saw great opportunity in this clear move of America away from energy self-sufficiency and immediately ordered a huge cutback in its own oil production (soon followed up by OPEC's support of this move) … and the price of energy began a dramatic climb.  Ouch!

Similarly Biden announced the decision to rejoin the World Health Organization, an organization that Trump had withdrawn from when he became strongly dissatisfied with its handling of the global Corona-virus pandemic ... especially its failure to point the cause of the pandemic in China's direction!

And Biden also ordered a halt on Trump's program of building walls along America's southern borders … in fulfillment of his campaign promise to do so.

Overall, American Progressives were very pleased with Biden's quick moves to redirect the country along their particular ideological lines.  In fact, it soon appeared that that Biden had no political thoughts that reached beyond the ideological conventions of the now very Left-Leaning Democratic Party.

"Doing ideology"

And unlike Trump, who would at least appear regularly before the American press, attempting to explain to this very hostile audience what it was and why he was doing what he was doing … Biden would only send his press secretary, Jen Psaki, to meet with a very fawning press.  Biden refused to put himself in a situation where he might be challenged on the spot.  That was not his style.  "Doing ideology" – and that alone – worked just fine for Biden!

Indeed, when he did finally hold his first press conference, it was not a rigorous back-and-forth of questions and answers typical of press conferences.  Instead it appeared to be almost a "rehearsed" gathering … which allowed select press to offer select questions answered by Biden almost as if reading from prepared script. But these were the only terms Biden was willing to open himself before a public wondering seriously what was up with the new president.

And … there was some matter of concern about his quite active Christian (Catholic) faith … even though he differed strongly with his church's stand on abortion and transgender promotion.  So indeed, what exactly was America getting as a new president?  He claimed to be a centrist ... though he spoke as a distinct Progressive – yet at the same time he saw himself as a devoted Catholic. Who, therefore, was this man?

This number of Executive Orders is more than what a president is likely to issue in
a full year's time!  Some 20 of these were merely reversals of Trump's own executive orders.

Here he is going to work, even on his inauguration day itself ... issuing 17 executive orders
on that day alone.  And everyone is back in proper presentation (for the press photo-shoot),
masked and standing six feet apart!

For one who just hours earlier claimed to want to work together with others ...
this kind of ruling by unilateral presidential decree seems to be a major contradiction.

Of particular interest is action relating to the pandemic (upping mask requirement for federal
workers)
Looking on are Vice President Harris and Dr. Anthony Fauci (the government's
top infectious disease expert)
